Men’s Tennis Welcomes Four New Hawks

Saint Joseph's tennis head coach Jeff Puhan has announced the addition of four new student-athletes, as Matthew Cizmarik, Matthew Dubas, Hector Fullone, and Santiago Valle will join the roster of the Hawks' men's tennis program for the upcoming season.

"I am very excited for this recruiting class," Puhan said.  "We have a strong group that committed to St. Joe's not just for the vision we have for the tennis program, but also for its strong academic reputation.  We have some exciting things going on at Saint Joseph's and we're ready to get things started for the new season!"

Cizmarik comes to Hawk Hill from Toronto, Ontario, where he was ranked in the top 20 in singles and in the top 15 in doubles.  He has collected three ITF doubles titles while adding a pair of runner-up finishes as well; last year, he also reached the Boys 18s singles final at the Texas Slam.  Cizmarik has also competed in the USTA Super Nationals and earned the "Work Ethic" award from the Austin Tennis Academy.

"I chose Saint Joseph's after my initial discussion with Coach Puhan," Cizmarik said.  "I knew it was the right school for me.  It is aligned with all my ambitions, as are the Jesuit influence, the location, and the size of the school."

Dubas hails from north of the border as well; the native of Vancouver, British Columbia, has been ranked as high as a five-star recruit and has a third-place finish at the Canadian National Championships on his résumé.

"St. Joe's is the perfect fit for me, both academically and in regards to tennis," Dubas said.  I believe that it will take me to the next level in my life."

Fullone is a native of London, England, but has spent the last number of years training in Spain.  He was a part of the runner-up squad in the Spanish U18 Team Championships and has also seen individual success, reaching the semifinals of a J100-grade tournament and the quarterfinals of a J60 event.  Fullone was also the winner of the U14 Road to Wimbledon tournament.

"I chose SJU due to its academic excellence and its tennis program, led by a fantastic coach," Fullone said.

A product of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Valle has reached a career-high Junior ITF ranking of 450th in the world and has been a top-four player in Mexico.  He has also represented Mexico in international competition.

"I chose Saint Joseph's because it is a top school in the Northeast, it has a beautiful campus, and because of the tennis program and the coach," Valle said.

The new additions join the squad in time for the fall slate of competition.
