Coming off a 1-0 win over Massachusetts on Friday, the Saint Joseph's University women's soccer team had a chance to sweep its New England road trip with a win at Rhode Island today. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they return home with a split as Rhode Island scored 12 minutes into overtime to down SJU 2-1 today at the URI Soccer Field.
Ninety minutes wasn't enough time to decide the game, as both clubs remained tied 1-1 after a scoreless second half.
Rhode Island had the first scoring chance nine minutes into overtime as the Rams' Debra Nelson had an open look, but her shot was blocked.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, two minutes later, Aimee Lambert scored off a pass from teammate Lauren Forgione, giving Rhode Island the 2-1 victory.
In the first half, the Rams got on the board first as Melanie Kasparek scored in the seventh minute.
Saint Joseph's responded late in the half, as Ginette Buffone tied the game just 31 seconds before halftime.
For the game, the Rams out shot the Hawks 22-6. SJU sophomore Megan Schutt accounting for five shots.
Hawks' freshman goalkeeper Jen Kuhn made 11 saves in the loss, while Ria Carroll made two saves at the other end for Rhode Island.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-7-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Atlantic 10 play. Rhode Island improves to 6-6-0 and 3-0-0 in the A-10 with the win.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Friday when it hosts Dayton at 7 p.m.
