PHILADELPHIA -
A hard fought contest, Saint Joseph's (3-4) matched #19 Penn State (5-4) for nearly 70 minutes, but the Nittany Lions tallied early in the second half to edge Saint Joseph's on Finnesey Field, 1-0.
A well played match both teams had numerous opportunities to score, but it was PSU that was finally able to break through. Senior Karin Grap picked up the ball in the circle, spun and cracked the ball through a crowd in front of the cage and into the goal with 26:40 left to play.
PSU outshot the Hawks 14-7 for the game and had a commanding 9-1 edge in the second half. Hawk freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer finished with seven saves and was helped out by four defensive saves, including three by junior Hilary Moody. Penn State's Megan Akstin had five stops.
PSU held a 9-3 advantage on penalty corners.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday against Lafayette.
