Hawks Field Hockey Team Humbled By # 11 Richmond, 5-1

PHILADELPHIA - Eleventh-ranked Richmond (10-2, 2-0 A-10) scored five times, twice in the first half and three times in the second, to defeat Saint Joseph's (6-5, 0-1 A-10) in Atlantic 10 field hockey action on Finnesey Field, 5-1. Sophomore Nicole Antonini netted the lone goal for the Crimson and Gray.

Expected to be a high scoring affair with both teams ranked among the national leaders in scoring, each team had numerous offensive opportunities, but it was the Spiders that were able to convert.

UR opened the scoring 17:10 into the first half when junior Whitney Wells manuevered through the SJU defense to make it a 1-0 game. The Spiders made it 2-0 with 10:45 remaining before halftime. Junior Holly Cram picked up the goal.

In the second half, Richmond scored three more times as Wells and Cram each scored again. Cram banged home a rebound just 4:18 into half number two for a 3-0 lead. Freshman Erin Arthur tallied 12:30 into half number two for a 4-0 advantage. Wells then netted the final Spider goal on a penatly corner, Cram picked up an assist with less than seven minutes to play.

Antonini broke the shutout by scoring with 12 seconds remaining. Junior Katelyn O'Brien collected the assist by poking the ball across the mouth of the cage after a corner opportunity broke down.

Richmond posted a slim advantage on shots 17-16 and also had a sizeable edge in penatly corners 10-5. Junior goalkeeper Michelle Swartz had seven stops, while SJU freshman netminder Rebecca Cunfer had two.

SJU returns to action next Saturday and Sunday hosting Rhode Island and Massachusetts in A-10 play.
