Sophomore Nicole Antonini knocked home a pass from Lauren luft with 4:05 left in the second overtime to lift Saint Joseph's (7-5, 1-1 A-10) to a 3-2 victory over Rhode Island (4-10, 1-2 A-10) in Atlantic 10 field hockey on Finnesey Field. Luft and junior Hilary Moody added goal for SJU.
SJU dominated play, but an oppotunistic URI attack allowed the Rams to seize a 2-1 lead early in the second half.
Luft put SJU on top midway through the first half, knocking home a rebound 18:08 into the opening stanza.
The Rams equalized ten minutes later when freshman Nanci Records deflected a shot by Jess Arnold into the cage with 6:11 left before intermission. URI took their first lead early in the second half when Joy Hess tallied off a cross from Jen Centenich 6:22 into half number two.
The Hawks picked up the attack as SJU earned 12 penatly corners in the second half, but it wasn't until Moody scored directly off a set at the 21:03 mark that SJU drew the game even.
The game went through the first overtime scoreless as URI netminder M.J. Britt and her Hawk counterpart Rebecca Cunfer each made several key stops. Britt finished the game with 14 saves, while Cunfer made four for SJU.
Antonini then knocked home the game-winner with just 4:05 left to play. Luft carried the ball down the right wing and cracked a ball toward the goal. Antonini then cut in front of a defender and deflected the ball into the cage.
SJU finished with a 29-9 edge in shots and a 17-3 advantage on corners.
SJU returns to action on Sunday at noon against Massachusetts.
