Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Powered by two second-half goals, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer inched closer to securing a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championships with a 3-1 win over Richmond Friday night at Finnesey Field.

The Spiders, who entered tonight's game as the second seed in the A-10, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Annette Isham took a cross-field pass from teammate Whitney Sikes and sailed a low line drive through traffic, beating Saint Joseph' s goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna at 18:35.

Less than 10 minutes later, the Hawks would rally to tie the score at one. After winning a corner kick, SJU senior Ginette Buffone sailed a ball to the far post, beating Richmond's goalkeeper Kelly Kolker at 27:15.

Both teams continued to battle as the score remained tied 1-1 at the half.

In the second stanza, Saint Joseph's came out fast, pressuring the ball deep into the Richmond end of the field. The Hawks soon broke the deadlock as sophomore Megan Schutt scored from eight yards out off a touch pass from classmate Ali Wean at 52:00. Buffone, also credited with an assists on the play, helped set up the scoring chance with a centering pass to Wean.

Saint Joseph's tacked on an insurance goal in at 68:24 as senior Marisa Barriere regained the ball after a blocked shot and beat Kolker to the far post.

Richmond pressed for the remainder of the game, but to no avail as the Hawks held the Spiders scoreless over the final 21 minutes.

Saint Joseph's improves to 7-10-1 overall and 5-4-1 in Atlantic 10 play. With the victory tonight, the Hawks move into fifth place in the A-10 with 16 points, holding a one-point lead over Massachusetts and Sunday's opponent, George Washington. Only the top six teams in the conference earn a berth into the A-10 Championships.

For the game, Saint Joseph's held the edge in shots, out shooting Richmond 13-11.

DiEnna, earning her second consecutive win, made three saves for SJU, while Kolker made three at the other end for Richmond as the Spiders fall to 8-7-1 overall and 6-4-0 in conference play.

Sunday's game versus the Colonials, which is also senior day for SJU, will begin at noon.
