Field Hockey Falls to UMass, 3-0, in A10 Semifinals

AMHERST, MA - UMass advanced to the Atlantic 10 Finals with a 3-0 win over Saint Joseph's in the conference semifinals. The Minutewomen now advance to the championship game against Richmond.

Massachusetts took a 1-0 lead off a penalty corner with 20:35 left. Patricia Borneo fed the ball into Katelyn Woolfrey who slid it across to Marije Tigchelaar. Tigchelaar's shot was saved by Rebecca Cunfer, but the rebound bounced right to Jaime Bawden on the right side of the circle. Bawden let off a quick shot which found the back of the cage. The Minutewomen then added another score off a penalty corner less then nine minutes later. Again, Borneo fed the ball into Woolfrey who slid it across the circle to Tigchelaar. Tigchelaar's shot got past Cunfer and gave Massachusetts a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, the Minutewomen scored off a penalty corner again to take a 3-0 lead just 1:17 into the start of the second half. Borneo fed the ball into Woolfrey, but this time Tigchelaar faked the shot. Bawden moved in and quickly took the shot which resulted in her second goal of the night.

Saint Joseph's then opened up the offense, but could not solve UMass goalkeeper Christine Tocco. With 22:43 left, Maureen Casserly got off a quick shot in front of the cage, but Tocco made the kick save. Then just under the 20-minute mark, the Hawks had two straight penalty corners. Hilary Moody got off a shot which was saved and Katie Young's next shot attempt went wide. One minute later, the Hawks got two more penalty corners which resulted in thee shots on goal but Tocco stopped them all. Nicole Antonini, Lauren Luft and Moody all had shots on goal in the flurry.

Both teams had 13 shots in the game and the Hawks held a slight edge in penalty corners, 7-5. Cunfer made four saves for Saint Joseph's, while Tocco had eight for the Minutewomen. Becky Letourneau played the final 3:38 for UMass but did not see a shot.
