PHILADELPHIA (3/23/03) - Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (19-11) dug itself out of an 11-point first half deficit and were up by three points with 3:05 left to play, but Richmond (21-10) freshman Araceli Gil drilled a pair of late three-pointers to lift the SPiders to a 56-53 win in a WNIT game at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Junior Erin Brady led the Hawks with 20 points and seven assists. Classmate Stephanie Graff had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She added three blocks to break both the SJU career and single season records for blocked shots.
SJU was up three, 51-48, when Graff connected on a driving layup with 3:05 left. Gil then drained a threepointer from the corner to knott the game. After both teams exchanged turnovers, Gil connected on another three with 1:17 left to put the Spiders on top. The two buckets were just her second and third field goals of the game.
A pair of Brady charity tosses drew the Hawks within a single point, but UR's Elise Ryder responded by hitting both ends of a one-and-one to make the margin three points with :14 seconds left.
The Hawks quickly pushed the ball up court and rotated the ball to junior Amra Mehmedic, whose three-ball missed the mark. The loose ball, however, went out of bounds off a Richmond player and SJU had another chance. The inbound play came to junior Irina Krasnoshiok beyond the arc, but her clean three-point look hit the front of the iron as time expired.
Richmond went on top early in the first half and used a 9-0 run midway through the opening stanza to build its largest leat at 21-10.
SJU clawed back and was within four-points at halftime, 27-23.
Brady had a strong game hitting 4-6 shots and a perfect 8-8 at the line. Graff added 13 points and Mehmedic had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Senior Ebony Tanner led three RIchmond players in double figures with 13. Sophomore Kate Flavin had a double-double (12 points-10 rebounds) and Gil finished with 10 points.
Graff finished the game wiith three blocks giving her 44 for the season and 99 for her career. The 44 rejections surpassed the single season mark of 41 set by Maureen Dougherty in 1990-91. The 99 career swats broke dale Hodges mark of 96 set from (1988-90).
The contest was the final game for SJU seniors Colleen McGahan, Natasha Pronga, Terraya Richardson and Takeya Trayer.
Saint Joseph's finished the season 19-11, 13- in the Atlantic 10 and 3-1 in the Philadelphia Big Five. A-10 Coach of the Year
