OLEAN, NY (2/06/03) - Juniors Erin Brady and Irina Krasnoshiok combined for 43 points to help the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (14-7, 9-1) hold off a feisty St. Bonaventure squad (5-15, 2-7 A-10) at the Reilly Center. The duo was particularly dangerous in the second half accounting for 28 of SJU's 45 points. The game tipped-off at noon as part of St. Bona's "Fieldtrip Day" event.
"We came together as a group at the right time today," assessed Hawk head coach
Cindy Griffin. "We made baskets when we needed to. We got stops when we needed to. And free throws down the stretch were very important for us.
The Hawks could not shake the Bonnies with the game's final six-point margin equaling the largest of the contest. The score was knotted 14 times, the final time coming at 66-66 after the first of two Amra Mehmedic free throws with 2:19 to play in regulation.
Mehmedic's second charity toss gave SJU a lead it would not relinquish, 67-66. Back-to-back buckets by Brady then gave SJU some space, 71-66, with under a minute to go. SBU trimmed the SJU advantage to three when junior Tory Vyborny dropped in a lay-up and was fouled. Vyborny, however, missed the free throw and Brady split a pair at the other end of the floor to make it a four-point contest.
The Bonnies would not score again and junior Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan iced the game with a pair of free throws.
The difference in the game came at the stripe where SJU connected on 21 out of 25 free throws. The Bonnies, meanwhile were just 9-19 at the line.
Brady led all scorers with 22 points and handed out six assists without a turnover. Krasnoshiok, who continued her hot shooting, was 9-15 from the floor. She finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Maura McBryan was the only other Hawk in double-digits, matching a career-high with 13 points and corralling a career-best eight boards.
Senior Becky Valenti led St. Bonaventure with 19 points. She almost single-handedly kept SBU in the game, hitting four three-pointers and scoring 15 points after the break. Eva Kadlecova added 13 points for the Bonnies.
"Every time we come up here it's always a dog fight," added Griffin after the game. "Bonaventure today played as hard as I have seen them play.
St. Joe's led by six midway through the first half, 17-11. St. Bona then went on a 13-3 run to surge ahead, 24-20. Three short jumpers by McBryan, however, helped SJU take a two-point lead at intermission, 29-27.
Foul trouble plagued the Hawk frontcourt of Krasnoshiok and junior Stephanie Graff. Graff was limited to just 19 minutes after getting whistled for three first half fols and a fourth early in the second stanza.
The Crimson and Gray remained unbeaten when leading at halftime (11-0). The victory was the 17th straight by SJU over the Bonnies dating back to 1996.
The Hawks will briefly return to Philadelphia and then depart for Pittsburgh to face Duquesne in the final game of a three-game road swing on Sunday.
