TRAVIS TIES SHUTOUT MARK IN LEADING SJU TO BERTH IN A-10 PLAYOFFS

KINGSTON, RI (05/04/02) - Sophomore Dana Travis tossed her school-record tying ninth shutout of the season to lead Saint Joseph's to a 2-0 win over host Rhode Island and a berth in the four-team Atlantic 10 Tournament to be held at the same Bill Beck Field starting next Thursday. Rhode Island, behind the strong arm and bat of senior Gwen Rack, took the first game by an identical 2-0 score. The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with the winner capturing the third seed in the A-10 Tournament. In game one, Rack, the A-10 leader in strikeouts with 275, tossed her second straight one-hitter, and scored both runs for the Rams. The URI hurler allowed just a first inning double to senior Kristin Nau in picking up her eighth straight win.Now 18-10 on the season, Rack retired 16 straight Hawks before Nau reached base in the seventh via an error. Rack also did damage at the plate, roping two-out doubles in both the third and fifth innings off Hawk starter Brandie Adams (12-5). The Ram star also stole third with a Gabby Zagami single driving her home for the game's first run. In the fifth, Zagami also singled, sending Rack to third with freshman Nicole Haywood singling her home. Travis was equally as brilliant on the mound in game two, allowing just three-hits in posting her third straight shutout, and tying Bonnie Gasior (1993) for the single season SJU record in the category. The Newark, Del. Native struck out six on the game, upping her SJU record total to 166, second to Rack in the A-10.With the win, Travis ups her record to 18-8 on the season, one win shy of Janielle Hoffman's school mark set in 1997. The Hawks got on the scoreboard first with a leadoff homerun in the second inning off the bat of freshman Alicia Cunic. It was her seventh of the season, third in the A-10 behind teammate Lindsey McNamara and UMass' Scooter Wheeler, each with eight. Freshman Cara Deldeo singled with two outs in the third. Nau moved her to second with a single and senior Teresa Andreani singled her home with the Hawks' second run. It was Deldeo's 38th run of the season, tops on the team, and sixth best in SJU history. Rack recorded her third double of the series in the first inning, but was stranded by Travis. Only one other Ram reached second base the rest of the way. SJU is now 31-15, 11-9 in A-10 play. Rhode Island evens its record at 26-26, 12-8 in conference action.
