EAST NORRITON, PA (04/22/03) - Sophomore Alicia Cunic homered and drove in five runs in the opener and junior Dana Travis allowed just one hit over the final six innings in the nightcap as Saint Joseph's swept La Salle in a softball doubleheader at East Norriton Field, 7-1 and 3-2. The Hawks won for the 11th time in their last 12 games to up their record to 19-8 on the season.
Cunic, who went 3-for 4 in the game, started her big day at the plate with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning, driving home Lindsey McNamara, who had reached base with a single.
After La Salle's Kathy Hennessey scored the tying run on a rare balk by sophomore pitcher Cara Deldeo in the top of the third, the Hawks broke the game open, plating three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Deldeo doubled down the leftfield line with one out to start the SJU offense rolling. Megan Richardson then singled to right to score Deldeo. McNamara, who scored three runs in the game to up her team-leading total to 21 on the season, singled up the middle, sending the speedy Richardson to third. Richardson then scored on a passed ball and Cunic picked up her second RBI with a single, making it 4-1.
That was all Deldeo needed on the mound as the team's everyday shortstop was brilliant in just her fifth start of the season. Taking Brandie Adams spot in the rotation due to the Hawk senior receiving a cortisone shot in her right shoulder earlier in the day, Deldeo allowed just five hits and one unearned run while striking out nine against one walk. She upped her record to 3-2 on the season while lowering her team-best ERA to 1.13.
SJU added three insurance runs in the fifth inning on Cunic's team-leading fourth homer of the season, a three-run blast to dead center scoring Deldeo, who opened the inning with her second double of the game, and McNamara, who reached on a La Salle error.
In the nightcap, Travis retired 18 straight batters after allowing a two-run homer to Alexis Schneider with one out in the top of the first inning. It was the first homerun that the Hawk hurler had allowed all season.
Travis (8-4) grew stronger as the game wore on, striking out five of her seven batters over the final three innings. La Salle's Amanda Clark ended her streak of 18 retired with a one-out single in the seventh. She then got Sarah Punderson to fly out to right and Maureen Berard to strike out to end the game.
SJU tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Jill Clementi, who was 2-for-3 in the game, doubled to start the frame. Robin Berry then reached on a fielders choice to put runners at first and second with none out. After Gale Treskot sacrificed the runners over, Travis grounded out for the second out. Deldeo then singled home Clementi with the first run. The Hawk shortstop then stole second with Berry scoring the tying run as Explorer shortstop Vinnie Caputo mishandled the throw to second.
Senior Desiree McGhie, who hit her first homer of the season on Saturday at Fordham, then connected for her second to right field, a solo shot, to give the Hawks the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the third.
McGhie doubled in the fifth inning, putting runners on second and third with no one out, but La Salle pitcher Amy Gooding (0-2), starting in place of Ali Wood (class commitment), shut the door on that threat. Gooding was solid for the Explorers, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out four.
SJU now travels to former A-10 rival Rutgers for a twinbill on Wednesday. It will mark the first meeting between the two schools since 1996. La Salle falls to 11-24 on the season.
Today's games did not count in the A-10 standings since they were not made up on the proper rain date in accordance with league rules.
