PHILADELPHIA, PA (06/24/02) - Saint Joseph's University basketball players
Susan Moran and
Bill Phillips have been named the female and male Scholar-Athletes of the Year in voting conducted among the Conference's directors of athletics.
Moran, the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, earned honorable mention All-America this past season and was named to the All-Conference first-team for the second year in a row. The senior started all 32 games for the Hawks, averaging a league-best 23.3 ppg, ranking fourth in the nation. She earned a record eight Atlantic 10 Player of the Week citations in 2001-02 and ended her career as Saint Joseph's all-time leading scorer with 2,340 career points. She also became the first player in school history to lead the team in scoring and rebounding all four seasons.She is currently playing for the New York Liberty of the WNBA.
In the classroom, Moran also excelled. A two-time Academic All-American, Moran earned third-team honors this season after garnering second-team laurels in 2000-01. A marketing major with a 3.66 grade point average, Moran also was named Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year in 2001 and 2002. She has also been a member of three Atlantic 10 All-Academic teams, as well as being on the Saint Joseph's Athletic Director's Honor Roll all eight semesters. She is also on the Saint Joseph's Dean's List.
Phillips earned second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors in 2001-02. He was the only Hawk to start all 31 games, averaging 11.6 points and 7.6 rebounds. He was not only effective inside, but he was dangerous from the outside, evidenced by his Atlantic 10 record .536 (30-56) three-point field goal percentage in league games, while his .495 (52-105) three-point percentage in all games set a school record.
Off the court, Phillips posted a 3.93 graduate school grade point average in financial services and a 3.63 undergraduate gpa as a finance major. He garnered second-team Academic All-America honors this past season after earning third-team honors in 2000-01. Phillips was twice named the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year. He is a member of the Saint Joseph's Dean's List and was an active member in SJU's Operation Santa Claus, providing food and gifts to needy families.

Male nominees included Tom Beechem (Dayton baseball), Sam Shea (Duquesne track & field), Thomas Blankvoort (George Washington golf), Todd Witzleben (La Salle, cross country & track), Erik Peterson (Massachusetts track & field), Michael Charles (Rhode Island soccer), Bret Myers (Richmond soccer), Borut Poje (St. Bonaventure swimming & diving), James Chan (Temple golf), and Rob Bakker (Xavier soccer & tennis).
