HAWK WOMEN PLACE EIGHTH AT A-10 INDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

KINGSTON, RI (02/16/02) - Senior Bernadette Speer and sophomore Maisha Tyler each claimed first team All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors by winning the high jump and long jump respectively at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track Championships. The Hawks placed eighth overall at the meet. Speer, who suffered a partially-torn patella tendon last week, was out indefinitely for Saturday's championships. After making the decision to compete, Speer knocked off 14 other competitors for the title with her ECAC qualifying jump of 5'7". Speer continues to compete until further complications. Tyler, who was hospitalized Thursday because of acid reflux problems, also competed through health problems to earn the long jump championship (18'03"). Tyler has emerged this year as a solid performer for the Hawks. Other highlights for the Hawks included a fourth place finish by freshman Kelly Victory in the 800 meter race. Victory came from a ninth place seed to earn points for SJU. Senior Mary Korfmacher also earned a fourth place finish in the 400 with a time of 59.78 seconds. Other scorers included Brooke Gilliford, Denise Fergus, Sarah Conway, Karen Weber and Colleen Flanagan. The Hawks next compete Friday and Saturday, February 22-23, when they travel to Virginia Tech to compete in the Last Chance Meet.
