BRONX, NY (04/19/03) - Senior Desiree McGhie hit a solo homer in the second inning and drove in the winning run in the fourth to lead Saint Joseph's to a 6-2 win over Fordham and a split in a key Atlantic 10 Conference softball doubleheader at Bahoshy Field. The Rams took the opener, 2-1, to stay alive for A-10 Tournament consideration.
McGhie launched her first homer of the season, and seventh of her brilliant career, to left field with one out in the top of the second inning to give SJU a 1-0 lead. Fordham then tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by pitcher Michelle Schlichtig. Schlichtig, the main reason for Fordham's success this season, was the winner in game one, upping her record to 17-6 on the season. She also set the Ram season strikeout record in twinbill, and now has 113 on the season.
Fordham made a pitching change to start the fourth inning, moving Schlichtig to third base and Carol Fischer (8-7) to the mound. The Hawks took immediate advantage of the move. Megan Richardson led off the frame with a walk and was advanced to second on a single to center by Lindsey McNamara. Alicia Cunic then followed with a single to load the bases. McGhie then drove home Richardson to give the Hawks the lead for good, 2-1, on an RBI groundout. After Jill Clementi lined into a doubleplay, Robin Berry, 2-for-3 in the game, singled home McNamara while Cunic was thrown out at home to end the inning.
Senior Brandie Adams, who upped her record to 7-1 on the season, pitched four innings, allowing seven hits, but just one earned run. After allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, Dana Travis, a hard-luck loser in the opener, relieved Adams. Travis allowed just one hit while striking out three over the final three innings to notch her second save of the year.
SJU broke the game open in the top of the seventh, scoring three more runs. Clementi led off the inning with a walk and was doubled home by Berry. Gale Treskot and Richardson (RBI) also singled in the frame with Cara Deldeo reaching base via an error.
In the opener, Travis (7-4) was outdueled on the mound by Schlichtig. The Hawk hurler allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out seven. The Fordham ace allowed five hits while striking out six.
Fordham opened the scoring in the fifth as Samantha Crocker was hit by a pitch with one out. Brandy Kean then hit a fly ball to centerfield, which was dropped by Richardson, allowing Erin Wilde, pinch-running for Crocker, to go to third and Kean to second. Jamie Chastain then drove home both runners with a two-run single through the left side.
SJU answered in the top of the sixth with one run on a Lindsey McNamara homer to left field. It was McNamara's third hit of the game (3-3) and her team-leading fourth home run of the season (15th of her career).
The Hawks then threatened in the seventh as Clementi singled to start the inning, and was sacrificed to second. Treskot then popped up to second base, which was dropped, but Fordham first baseman Jamie Dautel alertly threw to third, in which Kean tagged out Clementi. Dana Travis then popped up to short to end the game.
SJU, now 17-8 overall and 7-3 in Atlantic 10 play, needs to win one more game to officially clinch a berth in the A-10 Tournament. The Hawks, which have only one conference twinbill remaining, at Dayton on Friday, April 25, can also make the tournament without defeating the Flyers. It would entail St. Bonaventure (17-13, 5-3) posting fiveA-10 losses or Fordham (27-25, 5-5) posting six losses
