BOXSCORE GAME 2
EAST NORRITON, PA (4/21/04) - Saint Joseph's was held to four hits and despite a gutsy effort from senior
Dana Travis in the circle, the Hawks (13-21, 4-2 A-10) were swept by Temple in a softball doubleheader at East Norriton Field on Wednesday. The Owls' Lindsey Grace launched a two-run home run in the first game to account for the only offense in a 2-0 TU win. Temple (20-13, 5-1) also was victorious in the nightcap by an identical 2-0 score.
The opener was going along smoothly with only one Temple runner reaching base for either team in the first two innings. In the top of the third, Melissa McCartney reached base on an error and advanced to second on a Katie Weigle sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Jess Rohn came to the plate batting .155 with not a single extra-base hit to her credit. She came up clutch, however, with a two-run homerun to left-center to give TU a 2-0 lead.
Saint Joseph's had a tough time with freshman hurler Richelle Villescas, who kept the Hawk hitters off-balance with a nasty change-up. SJU did not advance a batter past first base during the contest and was held to singles by freshman
Rachel Pawlikowski, and juniors
Robin Berry and
Cara Deldeo.
Villescas earned the win to improve to 12-9 as she struck out seven in the complete game shutout. Travis held Temple to three hits and struck out six, but the two unearned runs in the third were enough to hand her the loss.
The Cherry and White got on the board early in game two as Lindsey Grace doubled to right with two outs. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, she scored on a Adrienne Repsher single. SJU appeared to have Temple starter Kim Wilkins solved, but several hard-hit balls were lined right at Owl fielders. Deldeo doubled for the Hawks in the third with two down, but was stranded.
Villescas returned to the circle in the fourth inning and twirled four perfect innings to keep the hosts at bay. Temple added an insurance run as Laura Gutscher singled, stole second and scored on a single by Aida Esquer.
Travis again was saddled with the loss, despite scattering five hits and striking out four. Villescas earned the win for Temple.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Friday in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader versus Dayton. Play begins at 3:00 p.m. at East Norriton Field. Prior to the game, the team will honor its two seniors,
Lindsey McNamara and Travis.
