WASHINGTON, DC -
Senior Katelyn O'Brien scored her career-high eighth goal of the season midway through the second half to snap a 1-1 tie and lift Saint Joseph's (7-3) to a 2-1 victory over Georgetown (3-7) on Kehoe Field. Junior Lauren Luft also tallied for the Hawks.
The Crimson and Gray were aggressive from the start and put pressure on the Hoya defense early in the game. Luft put SJU on the board first just at 5:14 into the contest when she converted a pass from classmate Maureen Casserly.
Despite the quick start by the Hawks, the Hoyas took advantage of their openings and sophomore Lauren Gallagher scored the equalizing goal off a pass from fellow junior, Deirdre McShea.
The second half saw a similar tempo to the first as the Georgetown backline was busy holding off the Hawks. At 55:54, SJU's Shelley Meier broke through and passed the ball to Katelyn O'Brien, who scored the game-winning goal.
SJU dominated play holding a 12-3 edge in shots, as well as a 12-3 advantage on penalty corners. Sophomore Rebecca Cunfer notched two saves to earn the win, while her counterpart, GU's Abby Winer, made five stops.
The Hawks open Atlantic 10 play against La Salle on Friday.
