Box Score
PHILADELPHIA, PA -
Saint Joseph's (7-4, 0-1 A-10) survived a wild finish to regulation, but La Salle (3-10, 1-0 A-10) scored 1:23 into the second overtime to notch a 2-1 victory in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both team on Finnesey Field. Junior Allison Geiger netted the gamewinner for the Explorers. Junior Nicole Antonini tallied for the Crimson and Gray.
La Salle won the contest on Geiger's goal just 1:23 into the second overtime. She took a pass from Coleen Nesbitt on a penalty corner and cracked ashot that deflected off an SJU defender and into the goal for the win.
The Explorer's nearly claimed the game with no time left in regulation. LSU drew a penalty corner as time expired. On the ensuing play senior Amy Dalrymple put a shot on goal that got past SJU netminder Rebecca Cunfer, but senior Hilary Moody kept it out of the cage before being called for a penalty stroke. Cunfer then stopped Dalrymple's stroke to force the extra time.
La Salle opened the scoring at the 24:38 mark of the first half when junior Suzanne Strocen tipped in a shot from Emilie Stewart on a panalty corner for a 1-0 lead. The Hawks evened the game less than eight minutes later as Antonini banged home a pass from Moody to make it 1-1 at halftime.
SJU controlled play for much of the game, but La Salle capitalized on its opportunities. The Hawks outshot La Salle 14-8 and held a 9-6 advantage on penalty corners.
Cunfer finished with three saves, while her counterpart LSU's Ellen Axelsen registered six stops.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday at 3:00 PM against West Chester.
