Behind a goal from junior Ali Wean, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team earned its first ever victory over Dayton with a 1-0 decision in Friday's Atlantic 10 opener. The win helps the Hawks to a share of first place in the A10 and snapped the Flyers 15-game home-win-streak in the process.
Saint Joseph's, which enter this evening's game 0-10-0 lifetime versus the Flyers, got on the board in the 17th minute as Wean recovered a rebound off a Hawk shot and buried into the back of the net at 16:57. Senior Alisha Paine was credited with the assist as she sent a crossing pass intended for Wean.
From there, senior goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna fortified the shutout for the Hawks, making five saves between the pipes.
The Flyers, who were receiving votes in latest SoccerBuzz.com National Top-30, out shot the Hawks 13-8 and held a 5-1 edge in corners.
Individually. Wean and Paine both added two shots apiece on the evening for Saint Joseph's.
Amanda Gallow paced Dayton with four shots, as Nikki Reed made five saves in the losing effort.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 5-5-1 and 1-0-0 in the Atlantic 10. The Flyers, who dropped a home contest for the first time since the 2003 season, fall to 5-3-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the A-10.
Saint Joseph's remains on the road as it travels to Xavier for an afternoon contest Sunday.
