The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team lost its first home Atlantic 10 match of the season Friday evening as the Hawks fell to Massachusetts 2-0 at Finnesey Field.
The Minutewomen got on the board early in the contest as Melissa Toulouse lobbed a ball from the right wing into the box. Following a bounce, Massachusetts' Nadia Villarroel headed the ball over the reach of Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Jen Kuhn, who had come out to challenge the ball, and into the back of the net at 7:18.
Massachusetts extended its lead to 2-0 12 minutes later as Jenny Roehrig took a centering pass from teammate Sydney Stoll and boomed a shot to the upper left corner of the net from 35 yards out.
Saint Joseph's had its chances in the second half as it tallied four shots on net, but Massachusetts goalkeeper, Kristin Walker, was steady, making four saves to secure the shutout.
For the game, the Hawks out shot the Minutewomen 7-5, with Massachusetts holding a 3-0 edge in corners.
Individually, seniors Ali Wean and Kimmy Leigh led the Hawks' offensive push, each recording two shots apiece on the night. Between the pipes, Kuhn made two saves.
At the other end, Villarroel and Roehrig finished with two points apiece for their goals, while Touloouse and Stool each earned a point for their assists.
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 5-8 on the season and 2-2 in A-10 play. Massachusetts improves to 9-4 on the year and 3-2 in conference games.
The Hawks return to action Sunday, October 15, when they host Rhode Island at 1 p.m.
