PHILADELPHIA -
The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team dropped its second straight Atlantic game of the weekend as the Hawks fell to Rhode Island, 2-1, on a late goal Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field.
With the game knotted 1-1 late in the second half, Rhode Island forced the ball deep into the Hawks end. Rhode Island's Lauren Forgionne gained possession of the bouncing ball out of a group of players and drove down the right side of the field. Going on-on-one versus a SJU defender, Forgionne got an edge and took a shot from the right edge of the goalkeeper box that beat Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Jen Kuhn and found the back of the net at 87:18.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, they were unable to muster a shot over the final moments as Rhode Island hung on for the win.
In the first half, Saint Joseph's opened the scoring at 14:15 as freshman Lauren Sutcliffe gathered a loose ball in front of the Rhode Island net and found the back of the goal.
The Rams responded less than two minutes later. Off a corner kick by Kassandra Spitler, Rhode Island's Deb Nelson flicked the incoming ball to an open Amy Cochran, who beat Kuhn to the far left post to tie the game 1-1.
For the game, Rhode Island out shot the Hawks 20-12 and held a 7-1 edge in corners. Between the pipes, Danielle Van Vierssen made six saves for the win, while Kuhn made four in the loss.
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 5-9 on the season and 2-3 in A-10 play. Rhode Island improves to 9-7 on the year and 4-1 in conference games.
The Hawks return to action Friday, October 20, at Saint Louis.
