The Hawks suffered their first conference loss of the season Sunday afternoon to La Salle, 1-0. The Explorer's home win drops SJU's record to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10.
The entire game was a hard fought match, with action on both sides of the field. 24:20 into the first half, the Explorers knocked in a goal of a corner opportunity. The Hawks were unable to tie up the score in the next 10:00 minutes before the intermission.
The battle continued through the second half, culminating in a penalty stroke being awarded to Saint Joseph's as time ran down. Freshman Anne Schreuders got off a hard shot but the La Salle goalie Ellen Axelsen batted the shot away, causing it to hit the top bar of the cage before recording the save. Officials added 14 seconds to the clock, but the Hawks were unable to capitalize to tie the score.
The Explorers out-shot the Hawks 10-9, while Saint Joseph's edged La Salle in penalty corners 7-4. Junior goalie Rebecca Cunfer had six saves for the day.
Saint Joseph's returns home to take on Villanova Wednesday, October 18th at 4:00 pm.
