Men's Tennis Splits Pair of Weekend Matches

SWARTHMORE, PA - The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team (3-1) used strong performances by seniors Antonio Aniello, and Chris Spencer and freshman Phil Bayliss to split a a pair of weekend matches. The Hawks were edged by Boston College on Friday, 4-3, at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center and then topped COlgate on Sunday at Swarthmore, 5-2.

In the win over Colgate on a snowy afternoon, SJU got off to a strong start winning the doubles point. Aniello and classmate Jimmy Hooland picked up a tight 8-6 win at #1 and Spencer teamed with freshman Pat Adams for an 8-2 win at #3.

In singles, Colgate notheced wins at #1 and #2, but SJU swept #3 - 6 to earn the win. Spencer was a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 winner at third, Senior A.J. Garabedian notched a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win at fourth, Aniello won 7-5, 6-4 at #5 and Bayliss posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at #6. Freshman Brent Kahl also won as the teams played a seventh singles match, 7-5.

Versus B.C., the doubles matches were tight and the Eagles took the point, winning at #1 (8-6) and #2 (8-5). Adams and Spencer won the third doubles match for SJU 8-6.

A three set thriller at #1 singles proved to be the momentum swinger in the match. SJU trailed 3-2, as B.C. picked up wins at #2 and #4 and SJU picked up wins from Spencer (6-0, 6-1) at #3 and Aniello (7-6, 6-4) at #5. Holland faced Kesthely at first singles and had three match points, serving at 5-4 in the second, after taking the first set. Kesthely fought off the points and battled back to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 to give B.C. the win. Bayliss won at #6 in a SUper-Tiebreak (3-6, 6-4, 10-8) to close out the scoring.
