The Saint Joseph's softball team earned a split Thursday at the Rebel games as the Hawks downed IPFW 4-0 in a morning contest and fell 5-3 to Monmouth in the afternoon.
In the opener, Saint Joseph's got a dominant performance on the mound from sophomore hurler Lauren Cognigni. Over seven innings, Cognigni allowed just two hits, while striking out nine.
At the plate, freshman Erika Rosenwinkel and sophomore Kate Falasca collected two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Monmouth jumped out to a 3-0 edge as it plated three in the bottom of the second inning.
The Hawks cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the third as freshman Dani Gonzales smacked a RBI triple and came around to score on a passed ball.
Monmouth extended its lead to 5-2 as it added a run in the bottom of the third and bottom of the fifth.
Saint Joseph's added a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Rosenwinkel, but it wasn't enough as Monmouth hung on for the 5-3 win.
With the split, Saint Joseph's moves to 2-8 on the season. The Hawks return to action Friday, March 10, versus Valparaiso at 8:50 a.m.
