Hawks Drop Atlantic 10 Pair at UMass

AMHERST, MA - The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped a pair of Atlantic 10 contests at Massachusetts Thursday as the Hawks fell 5-0 and 8-0 to the Minutewomen.

In the opener, Massachusetts pitcher Brandice Balschmiter held the Hawks to one hit, a single by sophomore Kate Falasca in the top of the first.

At the plate, UMass' offense touched up Saint Joseph's sophomore pitcher Lauren Cognigni for five runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits as the Minutewomen scored two in the first, one in the second and two in the sixth to hold on to the victory.

In the nightcap, it was more of the same as Massachusetts pitcher Jenna Busa held the Hawks scoreless, allowing only five hits.

In the field, Saint Joseph's allowed two runs in the first and three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

With the losses, the Hawks fall to 11-26-1 on the season and 2-6 in A-10 play. Massachusetts improves to 21-12 overall and 9-1 in A-10 contests.

Saint Joseph's travels to Rhode Island for a pair of games Saturday afternoon.
