Cognigni Sets Single-Season Strike Out Mark; Softbal Splits Doubleheader with La Salle

EAST NORRITON, PA - Saint Joseph's sophomore pitcher Lauren Cognigni set a new single-season record for strike outs and senior Lynn Ravert hit her third homer run of the season as the Hawks split a doubleheader with La Salle Friday afternoon. Saint Joseph's won the opener 3-1, but dropped the nightcap 3-2 in eight innings at East Norriton Field.

Cognigni strung two together two solid outings, combining for 20 strike outs over 14 innings, breaking the previous single-season strike out mark of 179 set by Dana Travis. Cognigni, who struck out nine in game one and 11 in game two, currently has 180 whiffs on the season with four games remaining.

In the opener, La Salle jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Danielle Signorelli scored on a RBI single by Michelle Sullivan.

From there, Cognigni shut down the Explorers, allowing only two base runners over the final six innings.

Offensively, it took until the sixth for the Hawks to get on the board, but they did when they need it the most. With runners at first and second with two outs, sophomore outfielder Carly Kinkler drilled a single into center field that got under the glove of La Salle's center fielder, allowing two runs to score for the Hawks. Kinkler would come around to score on the next play as freshman second baseman Sarah Falk singled down the right field line.

In game two, the Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead as freshman Erika Rosenwinkel drilled and RBI single in the fourth and Ravert smacked a solo homer in the fifth.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, La Salle tied the game at two in the sixth on a two-run homer by Laura DeZolt.

The Explorers scored one in the top of the eighth as the Hawks failed to tie in the bottom.

With the split, the Hawks move to 13-34-1 on the season and 4-12 in Atlantic 10 play. La Salle moves to 12-29 overall and 2-14 in conference play.

Saint Joseph's caps the home portion of its season Sunday as it hosts Princeton at noon.
