DAYTON, OH -
The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped a pair of Atlantic 10 contests at Dayton this weekend, falling 3-2 in the opener Friday afternoon, and 1-0 in game two after weather forced the second game to be postponed until Saturday.
In the opener, the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as freshman catcher Erika Rosenwinkel put SJU on the board with a RBI single.
The Flyers knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth, but Saint Joseph's responded in the top of the sixth as Rosenwinkel drilled a solo home run to put the Hawks up 2-1.
Leading 2-1 with one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Flyers bats got hot and connected for three hits of the Hawks sophomore hurler Lauren Cognigni, to score two runs to pull out the 3-2 win.
Cognigni allowed three runs, on eight hits, while striking out 10 and was the hard-luck loser.
In game two, Dayton's Chelsea Grozenski held the Hawks offense at bay for most of the game, allowing a single to Rosenwinkel in the top of the seventh to break up a no-hitter.
On the other side, Cognigni was just as solid for Saint Joseph's, as she held the Flyers scoreless heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, the bottom of the seventh was their downfall for a second game in a row, as Dayton's leadoff batter reached on a SJU error, and following a sacrifice bunt, came around to score the winning run on a RBI single by Lauren Schneider.
With the losses, the Hawks fell to 10-23-1 on the season, and 2-4 in A-10 play. The Flyers improved to 10-17 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Tuesday at Drexel.
