RICHMOND, VA -
Saint Joseph's senior forward Nancy Cook made the most of her one shot in overtime, finding the back of the net 4:45 into the extra stanza to give the Hawks' women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Richmond Friday evening.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the two squads entered extra time with the Spiders holding a 17-8 advantage in shots. Fortunately for the Hawks, that stat didn't matter as SJU converted on the lone shot of the extra frame. Just over four minutes into overtime, Saint Joseph's senior forward Megan Schutt broke free and dribbled uncontested towards the Richmond goal. As the Spiders' goalkeeper Kate Hudson came out to challenge the ball, Schutt passed the ball to a cutting Cook. Cook took the centering pass and placed the ball past Hudson into the back netting for the game winner.
In the first half, the Hawks and Spiders closely battled as Richmond held a slight 9-5 edge in shots. However, neither team was able to find the netting as Saint Joseph's junior goalkeeper Jen Kuhn made two of her game-high four saves, while Hudson made one.
The Spiders offense was dominant in the second half, registering eight shots, but Kuhn and Hawks defense didn't fold as SJU and Richmond both went scoreless to force the extra frame.
For the game, Richmond out shot Saint Joseph's 17-8, but the Hawks held a 5-2 edge in corners.
Individually, Kuhn made four saves on the night for the shutout, while Cook collected two points for the goal and Schutt earned one with the assist.
At the other end, Hudson made two saves for Richmond, while Jesse Wolfe led the team with five shots.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 1-0- in Atlantic 10 play and 4-6-0 on the season. The Spiders fall to 0-1-0 in A-10 play and 0-8-2 on the year.
