PHILDEALPHIA -
Sophomore Marisa Pizzi led the charge as the Hawks defeated the Longwood Lancers, 3-1 at home Saturday afternoon. The win lifts Saint Joseph's to a 6-5 record and leaves Longwood 4-6. Pizzi had five points for the day, with two goals and one assist.
Excitement picked up early in the first half, when senior Lauren Luft took off on a break away, deeked past the goalie and got off a shot to the bottom right corner. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Longwood goalie Erin West managed to get back in time to make a sliding save on the shot. Two minutes later, SJU was able to capitalize on its attack. After a corner opportunity, Pizzi, with her back to the goal, got the ball near the top of the circle and got off a turning shot that lifted into the upper left corner.
After ending the first half with a 1-0 lead, the Hawks came out stronger in the second getting off three shots and two corners in the first five minutes. At 41:18, junior Brianne Miller made a shot that bounced off West's pads, creating a scramble in front of the goal. Senior Nicole Antonini was able to get her stick on the ball and tap it over to the left side of the goal where Pizzi knocked it in for her second goal of the day. Longwood scored four minutes later, after a corner opportunity, making the score 2-1. Saint Joseph's quickly regrouped with a timeout and sealed the lead at 57:16. The third goal came after another scramble in front as Pizzi made a short pass to captain Maureen Casserly, scoring her first goal of the season.
The Hawks out-shot the Lancers 20-5 and edged them in penalty corners 13-1. Rebecca Cunfer made three saves for the day. Antonini's assist solidified her number two spot on SJU's all-time career list, leaving her just one assist behind first place Dani Bleam ('95).
Saint Joseph's returns to action Friday, October 6th at 3:00pm when they travel to Rhode Island to take on the Rhodies.
