BETHLEHEM, PA -
Playing through torrential rain for 90 minutes wasn't enough for the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team Tuesday afternoon. But thanks to the good timing of seniors Megan Schutt and Ali Wean, the game didn't take much longer as the Hawks downed Lehigh 4-3 in overtime.
With the game knotted at three, Saint Joseph's took advantage of its opportunity in the extra frame. Dribbling towards the Lehigh goal, Wean sent a crossing pass to Schutt on the left side of the box. Left unguarded, Schutt buried the game-winning goal past Lehigh's Julie Kafka at 95:29.
Even though SJU earned the win, the Hawks had to fight just to get into overtime. The Hawks trailed late into the second half, but senior Nancy Cook changed that in the 80th minute. Cook deflected a pass from classmate Kimmy Leigh that found the back of the net at 79:19.
In the first half, the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 15:10 as Wean headed in a pass from sophomore Amanda Morrell.
The lead quickly changed hands as Lehigh tied the game 33 seconds later on a goal by Daniela Molina. Lehigh would take a 2-1 lead at 29:29 as Matalie Hojnacki beat the Hawks' junior goalkeeper Jen Kuhn from 18 yards out.
Wean tied the score shortly after that with her second goal of the game, scoring off a pass from Leigh at 31:00.
Lehigh would regain the lead in the second half as Hojnacki scored her second goal of the game off a rebound to the far post at 70:39.
They would hold the lead for less than nine minutes before Saint Joseph's rallied and earned the overtime win.
For the game, Lehigh out shot Saint Joseph's 13-11, and held a 6-2 edge in corners. Between the pipes, Kuhn made three saves for the Hawks, while Kafka made four in the loss.
Individually, Wean finished the game with five points on two goals and an assist, while Cook and Schutt earned two points apiece for their goals. Leigh also earned two points for her two assists, while Morrell earned one point for her assist.
At the other end, Hojnacki led Lehigh with four points for her two goals.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 2-2-0 on the season, while Lehigh falls to 2-2-0
The Hawks return to action Friday, September 8, at Boston University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
