Box Score
EAST NORRITON, PA -
Two walk-off homeruns powered the Saint Joseph's softball team to a sweep of the Drexel Dragons on Wednesday afternoon. In game one, freshman Brooke Darreff hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth to propel the Hawks to a 7-4 victory. In the second game, sophomore Beka Shumock hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh to give SJU a come-from-behind 3-2 victory. Sophomore pitcher Dani Gonzales recorded the win in both games, pitching two scoreless innings in the first game, and a complete game in the second.
Drexel (11-11) got on the board first in game one, scoring three runs in the top of the third. The Hawks chipped away, scoring once in the fourth on a solo homerun by Gonzales and twice in the fifth on an RBI triple by sophomore Kelsey Moir and an RBI single by junior Carly Kinkler. The Dragons scored a run in the sixth, but a sacrifice fly by freshman Alyssa Neilson tied the game 4-4, where the score remained until Darreff's homerun to right-center sealed the victory.
Saint Joseph's (9-17) starter Lauren Cognigni pitched three innings and gave up three runs before giving way to Neilson. The freshman held the Dragons in check, ceding just one run before Gonzales took the mound to finish the game.
Game two was played in an intermittent drizzle, and Drexel took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. SJU had multiple chances, but could not break through until the bottom of the sixth, when junior Kate Falasca singled to lead off the inning. Sophomore catcher Erika Rosenwinkel then reached on a fielding error by the Drexel shortstop, bringing Falasca home with the first Hawk run. However, despite having runners on second and third with one out, the Hawks could not capitalize, and the game went to the seventh at 2-1. Freshman Cori Bower singled to start the inning. Senior Rachel Pawlikowski sacrificed her to second before Shumock's heroics gave the Hawks their second come-from-behind victory of the day. Gonzales was solid in game two, scattering six hits in seven innings while striking out six.
Saint Joseph's continues its homestand on Friday, April 13, with an Atlantic 10 contest against Dayton. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
