A two-run fifth was the difference Thursday afternoon as the Saint Joseph's softball team dropped a 2-0 decision at George Washington at the Mount Vernon Complex. The two teams will wrap up the doubleheader at noon on Friday.
After four scoreless innings to start the game, the Colonials Colleen Kegler single off the Hawks' junior pitcher Lauren Cognigni to lead off the bottom of the fifth.Following a strikeout, George Washington collected four straight singles, with Elana Meyers and Caroline Howe collecting a RBI apiece.
The Colonials Amanda Gabriel, who had given up just two hits through the opening five innings, gave up a leadoff single to the Hawks' Beka Shumock to start the sixth, but retired the next six SJU batters in order to earn the victory. Cognigni, who allowed only two runs on eight hits, struck out six in the loss.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 6-15 on the year and 1-2 in Atlantic 10 play. George Washington improves to 15-13 overall a 2-5 in the conference.
