Hawks Fall in Extra Innings to George Washington, 1-0, in Softball Series Finale

MOUNT VERNON, VA - The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped a heart-breaking 1-0 game to George Washington in eight innings Friday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Complex. The Hawks will try to bounce back Saturday with a doubleheader at Fordham.

After seven scoreless innings, the two teams were knotted at zero, forcing extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Amanda Gabriel set down the Hawks in order.

In the bottom half of the inning, Caroline Howe reached on an error by the SJU shortstop to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved Howe to second, Colleen Kegler singled up the middle, scoring Howe for the winning run.

Saint Joseph's Kelsey Moir, Erika Rosenwinkel and Alyssa Neilson each collected a hit on the day, while junior Lauren Cognigni was the hard-luck loser, allowing after striking out seven and allowing no earned runs.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 6-22 on the year and 1-3 in Atlantic 10 play. The Colonials improve to 16-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
