OLEAN, NY -
The Saint Joseph's softball team capped its 2007 season as the Hawks split their series at St. Bonaventure this past weekend. Saint Joseph's won the opener 1-0 on Friday, but dropped the second game, 2-1, on Saturday.
Backed by a superb pitching performance by junior pitcher Lauren Cognigni, the Hawks improved to 14-23 with a 1-0 win Friday. Cognigni held the Bonnies at bay, allowing only three hits, while striking out six, to improve to 7-11 on the season.
Offensively, Saint Joseph's tallied the lone run of the game in the top of the sixth. Following a one-out walk to sophomore outfielder Kelsey Moir, classmate Sue Lebow drilled a RBI double to left field for the game-winning run.
In game two, the Hawks again jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the top of the sixth. With runners at first and second with two outs, sophomore shortstop Dani Gonzalez drilled a RBI single up the middle to put Saint Joseph's up by one.
Unfortunately the lead was short lived as the Bonnies tallied a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. St. Bonaventure led off the inning with a double by Kristin Strong. Strong would come around to score on a RBI single by Anna Nagro, as Nagro advanced to second on a throw to the plate. Following a ground out in which Nagro advanced to third, Kathryn Pazda hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Nagro for the lead.
Down one in the top of the seventh, the Hawks were retired in order as the Bonnies held on for the win.
With the split, Saint Joseph's finishes the season 14-24 overall and 6-12 in Atlantic 10 play. St. Bonaventure moved to 17-17 overall and 5-8 in conference play.
