PHILADELPHIA -
The Saint Joseph's field hockey team lost another heartbreaker on Wednesday night, falling by a familiar 1-0 score to their crosstown rivals, the Drexel Dragons. Drexel's Carolina Gibernau scored the game's only goal midway through the second half to give the Dragons the win. For the Hawks, senior goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer was outstanding once again, making seven saves, including five in the first half.
Saint Joseph's (1-4) opened strong, with freshman Jen Wrublesky recording a shot on goal just 15 seconds into the game. Both teams then had opportunities as the half progressed, but neither team was able to find the back of the cage.
The game was suspended for approximately 25 minutes with 10:04 remaining in the first half due to an electrical outage. After play resumed, the first half came to a close with the Dragons outshooting the Hawks, 7-2.
Drexel (3-3) controlled the pace of play throughout the second half, finally breaking through with 17:30 to go in the stanza. Whitney Enck sent a penalty corner in to Gibernau, who moved to her right before firing a shot into the bottom left corner. SJU had a prime opportunity to equalize after time expired, as the Hawks were awarded a penalty corner at the end of regulation. Unfortunately for the home team, Wrublesky's rising blast was knocked away by Drexel goalkeeper Colleen McAndrew to preserve the victory for the visitors.
Wrublesky led the SJU offense, recording two shots on goal. Cunfer lowered her goals-against average to 1.12, third-best in the Atlantic 10.
The Hawks return to Finnesey Field on Friday afternoon for the fourth of five consecutive home matches. Game time against the Virginia Commonwealth Rams is set for 4:00 p.m.
