The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped its contest at the University of Delaware, 4-2, Tuesday afternoon at Delaware Field. The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but couldn't rebound after giving up four straight runs to the Fightin' Blue Hens despite a late rally.
The Hawks (4-11) opened up the contest scoring a run in the top-half of the first. After freshman Dana Bieniek led off the game with a double, junior Erike Rosenwinkel got SJU on the board with a RBI single to centerfield, scoring Bieniek to put her squad up 1-0.
Delaware (11-9) tied the game in the bottom half of the first, capitalizing on several Hawk errors. After reaching first with a one-out walk, Quinn Megargel advanced to third after stealing second and an error by the Hawks' catcher on the same play. With two outs, Megargel tied the game on a throwing error by SJU.
After three scoreless innings, the Fightin' Blue Hens grabbed their first lead of the game in bottom of the fifth as Megargel collected a RBI on a bases-loaded walk, giving Delaware a 2-1 edge.
The Fightin' Blue Hens added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth as Caitlin Smith delivered a two-out two-run homer off SJU senior pitcher Lauren Cognigni to put Delaware up 4-1.
Saint Joseph's cut the deficit to 4-2 with a RBI single off the bat of Rosenwinkel, but with the tying run at the plate, Delaware's Anne Marie Pagano was able to get SJU sophomore Brooke Darreff to ground out to end the game.
For the game, Rosenwinkel was 3-for-3 at the plate, with a pair of RBI, while Bieniek finished 2-of-4 with a pair of runs scored. On the mound, Cognigni was the hard-luck loser, allowing two earned runs over 5.2 innings, while striking out six.
The Hawks return to action Thursday versus Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m.
