PHILADELPHIA -
The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-0 match to Towson Friday evening at Finnesey Field. The Hawks (2-3-1) and Tigers played through constant rain and strong wind to a 0-0 draw at halftime, but Towson tallied two second-half goals to top SJU.
Playing with the wind advantage in the first half, Saint Joseph's outshot Towson 6-4, but failed to get one past the Tigers' goalkeeper Kristen Sample. SJU sophomore Maggie Lupinski placed two shots on net, but Sample was there both times to make the save.
In the second half, SJU's freshman keeper Christine Neal made two early saves on Towson shots, but the Tigers would break through in the 64th minute. Towson's Erica Marshall dribbled up the left side of the field and drilled a shot past Neal and into the bottom of the right of the net at 63:58.
Towson added to its lead just over seven minutes later on a goal by Danielle Rosanova. The Tigers' Kaysi Ward centered a pass from the left side of the box to an open Rosanova in the middle of the field. Rosanova beat a diving Neal to the right corner to give Towson a 2-0 edge at 70:59.
Saint Joseph's would register only one more shot for the game as Towson hung on for the win to improve to 4-2-0 on the year.
For the game, Towson outshot the Hawks 11-7 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Individually, Lupinski posted a team-high two shots, while Neal made five saves.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next Friday versus Penn. Game time is 7 p.m. at Finnesey Field.
