PHILADELPHIA -
Senior goalkeeper Kelly Swanick made 16 saves, including 12 in the second half, but the Saint Joseph's field hockey team lost to Cornell on Sunday, 3-2, at Buckley Field. Junior Therese Doyle scored her second goal of the season and senior Jen Wrublesky added her first with seven minutes to go, but a shot on a late corner went wide to prevent SJU from tying the game.
Saint Joseph's (1-4) got the scoring started five and a half minutes in as Doyle sent a blast that Cornell goalkeeper Alex Botte was able to get a piece of, but not enough to keep it out of the cage, giving the Hawks the early edge.
Cornell (3-1) replied with two quick-strike goals 57 seconds apart. Catie de Stio tallied her second goal of the season when she slammed home a loose ball that had trickled in front of the cage. De Stio then sent a pass to Kat DiPastina less than a minute later that DiPastina rocketed into the upper part of the cage to give the Big Red the lead.
De Stio tallied her second assist of the day with 10:05 to go in the second half when her shot across the front of the cage was redirected in by Hannah Balleza.
The Hawks would scrap their way back into the game three minutes later on a penalty corner. Senior Caitlyn Crane stopped the ball and sent it to Wrublesky, whose long range blast from the top of the arc cut the deficit to one with 7:00 remaining on the clock.
Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, Botte would make a pair of saves on shots by Crane and Nicole McCreight in the closing minutes to keep the SJU comeback attempt at bay.
Swanick's 16 saves marked a career high. Botte finished the game with eight stops for the Big Red.
Saint Joseph's is back in action Wednesday night at Lehigh before returning home for a contest with Rider on Friday.
