Men's Soccer Drops Hard-Fought Match To Towson, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team got goals from freshman Colin Reilly and senior Giacomo DiLisi, but a late Towson goal helped the Tigers edge the Hawks, 3-2, Sunday evening at Finnesey Field.

With the game tied at two all in the 78th minute, Towson's Phil Greatwich collected a loose ball at midfield and played a deep pass up the middle toward the Hawks' goal. In a sprint for the ball, the Tigers' Kay Banjo beat SJU goalkeeper Michael Moulton by a step and touched the ball to the far left side of the netting for the go-ahead goal at 77: 51.

Saint Joseph's freshman Ryan McFadden had two scoring chances in the final five minutes, but one shot flew over the crossbar and the other landed in the hands of Towson's goalkeeper, John Steele.

In the first half, Towson took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on an own goal by Saint Joseph's. With the ball deep in the Hawks' backfield, the SJU defense misplayed a ball backwards in its box and past the goalkeeper to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the 3:17 mark.

The Tigers (2-0-0) extended their lead to 2-0 at 15:33 as Enrico Skrypzak's took a pass from Zach Hoffer and placed a shot from the top of the left box that deflected off the inside of the right post and into the back of the net.

Saint Joseph's (0-2-0) made it a 2-1 contest in the 39th minute on the first collegiate goal by Colin Reilly. With the ball on the Towson right endline, freshman Jimmy Reilly played the ball to the middle of the Tigers' box where Colin Reilly dove and headed the ball into an open net at 38:06.

DiLisi knotted the game at two all in the 53rd minute off a pass from classmate Alex Garst. With the ball deep in the Towson zone, Garst played the ball to DiLisi in the middle of the box who in turn headed a shot to the left side of the netting to tie he game at two all at 52:18.

The game remained the same until the final 14 minutes as both teams were denied on their scoring chances.

For the game, Towson outshot the Hawks 14-12 with each team finishing with two corner kicks apiece.

Moulton posted a game-high five saves for the Hawks.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Friday against Duquesne at the Pittsburgh Classic.
