The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 match to Richmond Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field. The Hawks got a goal from sophomore Shannon Farrell in the 81st minute, but had several shots miss by inches in the final minutes as the Spiders hung on for the win.
After a scoreless first half, Richmond (9-4-2, 3-1-0 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring n the 51st minute as Emily Dale took a pass from Becca Wann and chipped a shot to the upper left corner and over SJU's charging goalkeeper, Christine Neal, to make it 1-0 at 50:28.
The Spiders upped their lead to to 2-0 in the 70th minute off a breakaway goal from Natalie LeClair. Off a throw in from Wann on the right side, LeClair took the ball and beat the SJU defenders to get a one-on-one versus Neal. LeClair made her shot count as it found the inside netting at the far left post to make it a two-goal game at 69:49.
Saint Joseph's (5-4-4, 0-2-2 A-10) cut the deficit to one on Farrell's tally at 80:37. Senior Maggie Lupinski flew a corner kick from the left side to the far right post where Farrell skied above the Richmond defense and headed the ball into the left side to make it a 2-1 game.
The Hawks would have two more scoring opportunities, but a shot by sophomore Devin Griffin glanced off the right post, and a charging shot by Lupinski sailed wide of the goal.
In net, sophomore Lauren Jancuska made four saves in the scoreless first half, while Neal made one save in the losing effort.
The Hawks return to action on Friday at home against Temple at 7 p.m.
