CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
Sophomore Nicole Gerdes tallied a pair of goals within 53 seconds, but seventh-ranked Virginia pulled away in the second half to earn a 6-3 victory over the Saint Joseph's field hockey team on Sunday afternoon.
Virginia (11-2) started the scoring off three minutes in with a goal on a penalty corner by Elly Buckley. Another corner 11 minutes later led to a goal by Michelle Vittese to double the Cavalier advantage.
Saint Joseph's (2-9) answered in a flurry with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half. Gerdes took a feed from senior Meghan Githens after a penalty corner to get the Hawks on the board with her third goal of the season.
Gerdes added her fourth 53 seconds later, reverse chipping the ball past UVA goalkeeper Rebecca Holden after picking up a loose ball in front of the cage to send the teams into halftime tied at two.
Paige Selenski notched a pair of goals four minutes apart to give the Cavaliers the lead back before Vittese and Buckley each netted their second of game to push the advantage to four.
Freshman Rachael Brosious scored her second goal of the season on an assist from senior Abby Hoover on a penalty corner after time had expired to set the final score.
Junior goalkeeper Kate Mitchell made 12 saves in the game, while Holden had a pair for Virginia.
The Hawks return home to close out their non-conference schedule on Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. game against Villanova at Ellen Ryan Field.
