Martin's Two Goals Lead Field Hockey Past La Salle, 3-1

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Junior Jordan Martin tallied two goals and junior Tori Popinko added the first of her career as the Saint Joseph's field hockey team opened conference play with a 3-1 win over La Salle at Hank DeVincent Field on Friday afternoon.

Saint Joseph's (4-8 overall, 1-0 Atlantic 10) jumped out to an early lead as Martin continued her recent run of form and tallied her fourth goal of the season just 2:26 into the game.  Her blast from the top of the circle beat Lisa Shaffer to the left corner of the cage and gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, Popinko scored the first goal of her career, picking up a loose ball and depositing it in the cage for a 2-0 lead with 22:15 to play in the first half.

Martin struck again just four minutes into the second half as Sarah Yerk's second assist of the game helped extend the Hawk lead to three with 30:48 remaining.

La Salle (4-9 overall, 0-1 Atlantic 10) got on the board with 22:13 to play as Colleen Kempf tallied her first goal of the year on an assist by Olivia Leaman, but goalkeepers Rachel Barnett and Amelia Deibler made the margin stand up.

Barnett got the start and made four saves, while Deibler made five stops in relief.  Shaffer made nine saves for the Explorers.

Saint Joseph's wraps up the non-conference portion of its slate on Sunday afternoon when Cornell comes to Ellen Ryan Field.  Game time between the Hawks and Big Red is set for 1:30 p.m.
