Directions to Mackal Fieldhouse
PHILADELPHIA - The men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Kingston, R.I. this weekend for the 2013 Atlantic 10 Track and Field Championships. Between the two squads, Saint Joseph's will be led by 20 Hawks who rank in the top ten of 15 A-10 events.
"The quality of the teams and performances in the conference this year makes the A-10 very exciting," said track director and women's track head coach Kevin Quinn. "We are looking forward to the opportunity to perform at the highest level and know the competitors in our conference will do exactly the same thing."
Graduate student Kevin McDonnell will highlight the men's side of the competition as he leads the conference in the 5000m (14:19.69) by over three seconds and ranks second in the 3000m (8:14.40).
Also included in the multi-event ranks include sophomore Logan Mohn, who sits second in the 1000m (2:26.88) and fourth in the mile and junior Tommy O'Kane, third in the 1000m and fifth in the mile. Junior Aaron Leskow is placed seventh in both the mile and 3000m.
Junior Jonathan Eisemann will represent the sprinting events as he ranks seventh in the 60m while sophomore Tyler Gallen and junior Griff Roberts stand at fourth and eighth, respectively, in the 500m. Senior Dave Manion will look to lead the Hawks in the 800 with a 10th-place rank in the event.
Sophomores Steven Butenewicz and Paul Szulewski are locked in for fourth- and fifth-place rankings in the 1000m and 3000m, respectively, while graduate student Dan Roark rounds out the distance ranks with an eighth-place position in the 3000m.
Rookie sensation Alec Peabody stands behind just three seniors in the four spot as the only freshman in the top ten.
The team of Manion, O'Kane, sophomore James Gentile, and Butenewicz lead the conference in the 4x800m relay (7:38.18) while the DMR quartet of Leskow, Roberts, O'Kane, and Mohn sit in second (9:54.45).
Women's track junior standouts Emma Slattery and Elizabeth Barrett rank in the top five of three categories and stand at third and fifth, respectively, in the mile. They also each rank fifth in two additional categories - Barrett in the 1000m and Slattery in the 3000m. Senior Erin James rounds out the distance ranks with an eighth-place position in the 5000m.
Sophomore standouts Georgia Mason and Kayla Charles rank seventh and 10th, respectively, in the 60m hurdles. Charles's 10th-place position will prove to be advantageous when she competes in the pentathlon, an event that includes the 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, and 800m. Mason is not expected to compete due to a hamstring injury suffered in January.
Sophomore Brianna Hunt leads three Hawks in the jumps. Hunt ranks second in the entire A-10 in the high jump (1.70m) while senior captain Hannah Boyce checks in fifth and sophomore Kathryn Polaski sits at eighth in the triple jump.
The DMR team of senior captain Sara Walker, junior Katie Pratt, Slattery, and Barrett holds the fastest time in the conference (11:53.95). Holding a third-place rank is the 4x800m relay team of Walker, freshmen Lauren Hehir and Sara Radzwilka, and Barrett.
The A-10 Championships will kick off on Saturday, February 16, at 9:00 a.m.
