Fighting back from down 12 in the second half to force overtime, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team eventually fell in the extra frame, 70-63, to Fordham Sunday afternoon at Rose Hill Gym. Redshirt senior forward Chatilla van Grinsven paced the Hawks with 26 points and 13 rebounds, and surpassed the 1,000 point plateau for her career.
Trailing 38-26 early in the second half, the Hawks (19-7, 10-2 Atlantic 10) fought back to tie the game at 58-58 with 14 seconds to go on a jumper from the foul line by junior forward Ilze Gotfrida .
Fordham (20-7, 10-2 Atlantic 10) turned the ball over with 9.1 seconds to go, but Saint Joseph's couldn't take advantage, leading to overtime.
In the extra time, the Rams scored the opening five points as the Hawks didn't score until a free throw by redshirt sophomore Natasha Cloud (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) at 1:40 made it a 63-59 game.
Unfortunately for SJU, the Hawks would get no closer as Fordham hit 7-of-8 free throws to close out the game.
In a back-and-forth start to the game, the Hawks held an early 16-14 lead, but a 10-0 run by the Rams gave the hosts momentum as they took a 24-16 lead on a layup by Christina Gaskin at 7:26.
Down 27-20, the Hawks cut it to a one-possession game with less than three minutes to play in the half. Two free throws by van Grinsven, including her 1,000 career point, and a jumper by Prim made it a 27-24 contest, but the Rams would score six straight to end the half and take a 33-24 lead into the second stanza.
