RICHMOND, Va. -
Daniel Thorpe threw a complete game, holding Richmond to six hits, but the Spiders ultimately topped the Saint Joseph's baseball team, 2-1, at Pitt Field on Sunday afternoon. Chris Hueth recorded two hits on the day for SJU.
Saint Joseph's (19-19 overall, 7-5 Atlantic 10) scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Quinn Renner that scored Anthony Cirillo with the game's first run.
Richmond (24-14 overall, 7-5 Atlantic 10) answered in the bottom half as Adam Forrer drew a one-out bases-loaded walk to tie the game. However, Thorpe induced a double play ball from Bret Williams to end the inning.
The Spiders went in front for good in the seventh as Forrer hit a sacrifice fly to score Tanner Stanley with what turned out to be the decisive run.
Thorpe allowed two runs on six hits to go with six walks and four strikeouts. He fell to 3-6. Jacob Mayers also threw a complete game for the Spiders, allowing just one unearned run on three hits while walking none and fanning four to improve to 2-0.
Hueth had two of SJU's three hits on the day, while Stefan Kancylarz recorded the other.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday when they host Delaware in their final home non-conference tilt. First pitch at Smithson Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
