Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Sarah Yerk tallied her first goal of the season early in the second half, but a late Longwood goal sent the Saint Joseph's field hockey team to a 2-1 defeat on Saturday afternoon.
Longwood (1-0) took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime as Stacey de Grandhomme slotted home her first of the season with 21:26 to play in the first half.
Saint Joseph's (0-2) equalized less than two minutes into the second half as Yerk scored after a penalty corner on a feed from Nicole Gerdes.
Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, de Grandhomme netted the winner with 5:29 to go, converting a corner of her own with assists from Jennifer Burris and Jessica Diaz.
Rachel Barnett made seven saves for the Hawks, while Eva Gekas added a defensive save. Kaye Goulding made five saves for the Lancers.
SJU will return to Philadelphia for an intra-city tilt with Drexel on Friday, September 6. The Hawks will then host Fairfield two days later in their home opener.
