PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team earned its third straight victory on Friday as the Hawks got a key goal from sophomore Emily Gingrich and stellar play from junior goalkeeper Allison Ebling and the defense to top Lehigh, 1-0, at Sweeney Field.
Coming into Friday's game having won the last two games 1-0 behind goals from Gingrich and shutouts by Ebling, the Hawks looked to keep their momentum as they began a four game homestand.
After a scoreless first half in which Saint Joseph's out shot the Mountain Hawks 5-2, the host Hawks would get a little luck early as a Lehigh goal was waved off in the 54th minute on an offsides call.
As both teams played to a standstill, it would be the Hawks' offensive pressure that would break the scoreless tie. With the ball down the Lehigh right wing, senior midfielder Jill Root controlled the ball and dropped a pass off to sophomore forward Shannon Mulvey. Mulvey took the ball and quickly delivered a crossing pass into the Lehigh box that a defender misjudged and allowed Gingrich to leap and head a shot into the far right post and in at 72:31.
Up 1-0, Saint Joseph's defense and Ebling would make the lead stand as they held Lehigh to just one shot over the remaining time to improve to 4-3-0 overall, while Lehigh fell to 2-1-1.
With the goal, Gingrich continued to add to her team lead with her seventh on the season, while Mulvey earned her team-best fourth assist and Root added her second. Ebling, who is now 4-3-0 overall, earned her third shutout of the season and has now gone more than 274 consecutive minutes without giving up a goal.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday when they host LIU Brooklyn at 1 p.m.
