NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph's freshman Melissa Herd was named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Rookie of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
Herd was the lone rookie to start each of the Hawks' first two games, and she scored her first collegiate goal in the second half of Sunday's 4-1 win over Towson.
A native of Perkasie, Pennsylvania, Herd helped lead the Hawks to wins in their first two games for the first time since 2006. SJU opened the season with a 2-1 win at Lehigh before opening the home slate with the win over the Tigers.
Saint Joseph's heads to Washington, D.C., on Friday for the AU Classic. The Hawks will face nationally ranked American and Michigan State on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
