Box Score BOONE, N.C. – Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Saint Joseph's field hockey team ran roughshod over Appalachian State in the second half on the way to a 6-1 win at Adcock Field on Sunday afternoon. All six goals were scored by seniors, including two apiece from Nicole Gerdes and Jordan Martin.
The Hawks found themselves behind early as Laura Malinoski converted a penalty stroke for Appalachian State (2-9) just over two minutes into the game to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.
Saint Joseph's (5-5) turned it on in the second half, as Tori Popinko notched her first of the season just 2:58 into the frame on an assist from junior Sarah Yerk. A little over five minutes later, Martin scored her first of the day, picking up her own rebound and beating Appalachian State's Cristina Ceppi for a 2-1 advantage with 26:42 remaining.
Martin then assisted on Gerdes' first of the game and second of the season four minutes later to give the Hawks a two-goal margin.
Corie McLaughlin tallied her second penalty stroke goal of the year with 13:22 to go to push the lead to 4-1.
Gerdes and Martin finished off the scoring in the final eight minutes, each assisting on a goal by the other. Martin fed Gerdes on a breakaway with 7:28 remaining before Gerdes returned the favor to Martin on a penalty corner with 4:11 left in the game.
Martin finished the day with two goals and two assists to lead the charge, while Gerdes tallied two goals and one assist for a five-point day.
Sophomore Amelia Deibler made two saves in the cage as the Hawk defense held the Mountaineers to just five shots on the afternoon. SJU enjoyed a 17-5 advantage in shots for the game, while the Hawks took eight corners to ASU's three.
Ceppi made five saves for Appalachian State.
The Hawks return home on Friday for an Atlantic 10 matchup with Richmond. The game is set for 3:30 p.m. at Ellen Ryan Field.
