PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's and women's cross country squads will head to Lehigh University's 42nd Annual Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa. this Friday, October 2. The men's 8k open race is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women's 6k open race at 10:15 a.m. on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The men's 8k Gold race will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the women's 6k Brown race at 1:00 p.m.
The Paul Short run is one of the largest cross country meets in the nation, with more than 5,500 athletes from over 400 competing teams.
This year's Paul Short Run will contain three nationally-ranked top 25 teams in Division I in the men's college draw, with No. 7 Villanova, No. 8 Iona and No. 15 Georgetown. On the women's side, No. 4 Georgetown will be the lone nationally-ranked team represented among Division I institutions.
Currently ranked eighth in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region, the men's squad will race the Gold race against fellow ranked Mid-Atlantic schools in Villanova (1), Georgetown (2), UMBC (7), Lehigh (11), La Salle (14), and Temple (15). Graduate student co-captain Paul Szulewski owns SJU's fastest career 8k (24:45.5) while juniors John Mascioli (24:46.30) and Jimmy Daniels (24:53.80) also hold sub-25:00 8k PRs. Mascioli, Daniels, and senior co-captain Quinn Davis scored at last season's Paul Short Run.
The Hawks are coming off of a third-place team finish at Iona's Meet of Champions, finishing second only to then-#4 Wisconsin and then-#17 Arkansas and knocking off then-#8 Iona and then-#20 Johns Hopkins (DIII) on Saturday, September 19. Mascioli posted SJU's top time (26:23.4), followed by sub-27:00 performances by Davis (26:28.8), junior Dan Savage (26:38.7), and Szulewski (26:54.8).
SJU is coming off of its first 6k race of the season at Iona's MOC on Saturday. Freshman Lindsey Oremus posted SJU's top time (23:24.5), followed by sub-24:00 performances by junior Sarah Regnault (23:28.9), freshman Britton Gagliardi (23:29.8), and Coughlin (23:49.4).
