RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman Michaela Finneyfrock's goal in the 87th minute lifted the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Richmond Thursday evening.
With the game knotted at 1-1 for the entire second half, Saint Joseph's got the decisive tally with under four minutes to play as the ball was pushed up the right wing and cleared into the box. On the service, Finneyfrock positioned herself in front of the Richmond box and deflected the ball into the open net to give SJU a 2-1 lead.
Richmond had one last chance, but failed to get a shot on goal as the Hawks moved to 2-3-0 in the Atlantic 10 and 8-6-0 overall with the victory.
In the first half, Richmond opened the scoring at 19:07 as Hunter Rooney chipped in a shot from 10 yards out to put her squad ahead, 1-0.
The Spiders lead didn't last long as SJU junior Emily Gingrich tied the game at 1-1 with her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 35th minute. Getting a pass at the top of the box from Janine Mueller, Gingrich drilled a shot that deflected off the far post and into the net to even the score at 34:11.
The game would remain tied until the final minutes when Gingrich and Hannah Racis teamed to find Finneyfrock for the game winner.
In goal, senior Allison Ebling made a game-high six saves to improve to 7-3-0 on the year.
The Hawks return to action Sunday versus Duquesne at 1 p.m. Saint Joseph's will honor its senior class prior to kickoff.
